The Wording Will Give You Keys

absolutesIt’s easy to gloss over the words of a question and think you know what they are going to ask you.  Don’t be fooled. Many questions have words that are keys to the correct answer.   One example is the use of absolutes.  These are words like “always”, “never”, “all of the following”, and so forth.  If you have a question that has an absolute word, then an answer that is absolute is required as well.  Pay attention to those kinds of words and make sure that your answer supports the question.

A common use of the absolute is to state that all of the following answers  are correct EXCEPT one. Questions 25 and 26 of the Reading Testing in the 2011-2012 Preparing for the ACT booklet are examples of the use of this type of absolute.
